The world No 1, Novak Djokovic destroyed his great rival Rafael Nadal at the 2019 Australian Open to win a historic seventh men’s title. Top seed Djokovic made history becoming the first man to win seven titles at Australian Open, beating Federer’s record of six. Amazingly he has never lost here in a final. And by claiming a 15th major, he also moved clear of Pete Sampras on the all-time ladder.

It was Djokovic’s third Grand Slam in a row, winning Wimbledon and the US Open in 2018. Expectations were high for the 53rd meeting between Djokovic and Nadal, promising to be one of the best finals in tennis history. Instead Novak gave a stunning performance sweeping aside World No.2 Nadal, 6-3 6-2 6-3.

He said his clinical semi-final win over French Lucas Pouille on Friday was one of his best performances at Rod Laver Arena. The last time Nadal and Novak met in the Australian Open final, was 2012 where it took them almost six hours – the longest Grand Slam title match in history. This time he needed only 124 minutes to secure victory.

Djokovic hit 23 winners and made four unforced errors, losing just six points on serve, which sealed an early break for a 2-1 lead in the third, as Nadal, who was playing in his first competitive tournament since retiring at the US Open last year, faced a straight sets defeat in the final of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

Djokovic moves a step closer to surpassing Roger Federer’s all-time Grand Slam record. Winning three majors in succession, Novak has moved within five of Federer’s tally of 20 titles and is motivated to surpass the Swiss.

World No.1 Djokovic, will most probably have to face the ‘king of clay’ and 11-time French Open champion Nadal again, on clay in June. Victory will complete the “Novak Slam” – four consecutive major titles – for the second time in his career. Neither Federer or Nadal have ever managed it.
