Djokovic vs Federer making history in the process
Novak Djokovic Roger Federer. Greatest rivals in tennis, meet in the Cincinnati final for the fourth time.
Djokovic, the thirty-one-year-old Serb, who had lost the Cincinnati Masters final on five previous occasions – three lost to his nemesis Roger Federer, has finally mastered the one tournament that has eluded him after beating the seven-time champion 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday and made history in the process, the former world number one became the first player in the 28-year history of ATP World Tour Masters 1000s to win all nine elite tournaments and complete the career Golden Masters after victory at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.
The win gave Djokovic his second title of the year after securing Wimbledon, while Roger Federer remained at three titles after winning Australian Open, Mercedes Cup and ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament.
The Serb leads their all-time series 24-22, a win for world number two, Roger Federer would have evened the score line and would have given Federer his 99th career trophy. It was their first meeting in nearly two years, and triumphed in a tournament that Federer has won seven times, never losing a final. Victory over Federer moved him to a total of 31 career Masters titles, two behind leader Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic, the 2018 Wimbledon Champion and Rafael Nadal the 2018 French Open Champion are favourites for next week’s US Open starting 27th August at Flushing Meadows in New York.
He had to play five matches before lifting the trophy, beating USA’s Steve Johnson, France’s Adrian Mannarino, Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, Canadian Milos Raonic, Croatia’s Marin Cilic, while saving his best performance for last.
Champion in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, Canada, Shanghai and Paris he was finally able to add the Cincinnati title to his mantlepiece and US Open just a few days away, a third New York crown could well be coming his way.
