WMG hosted numerous clients at the Aviva Stadium on the weekend and what a Barn Burner it was.

Two of the top rated sides in the rugby world came face to face on Saturday 17th November and history was certainly made. Ireland beat New Zealand 16-9 at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin recording their first ever home win against the All Blacks and only their second time ever.

A brilliant 48th minute try scored by 22-year-old Jacob Stockdale, with the boot of Johnny Sexton, secured Ireland their historic victory in Dublin. While the back to back world champions failed to score a try for the first time in 23 tests and second time in over four years. So hats off to Peter O’Mahony and Andy Farrell and the 23 players who carried out a magical defensive effort.

Johnny Sexton and Beauden Barrett traded penalties before Ireland surrounded the All Black line. The bizarrely ill-disciplined New Zealand kept on leaking penalties so Ireland kept the pressure on their visitors.

Stockdale’s try pushed his side into a 10-point lead in the 49th minute before their heroic defensive display giving Peter O’Mahony man of the match.

Sexton gave away a penalty for a high tackle that allowed his opposite number to shrink the gap to just seven points but the Irish fly-half and Stockdale pressured Ben Smith out of touch.  Huge hits kept on coming as Sexton departed but the Irish line held firm to clinch a momentous victory in Dublin.

New Zealand will retain their world number one status despite losing to second-ranked, Joe Schmidt’s side. Although All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen insisted before this clash that the winner would swipe the global bragging rights and after overcoming this relentless against B2B champions few could argue they have earned the right to call themselves the worlds best.
