LeBron James bringing Lakers back to the NBA forefront

The Los Angeles Lakers are a storied NBA franchise dating back to the league’s most early years. Legendary players such as George Mikan, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal all wore a Lakers’ uniform. Having won 16 NBA titles, the Lakers are just one championship behind the Boston Celtics for most in NBA history.

Time have been rough for the Lakers, having not had a winning season since 2012-2013. It’s been so bad in Los Angeles that the team has only won above 30 games in a season once since that time. However, that is about to change, as the acquisition of future Hall of Famer LeBron James has vaulted the Lakers back to contention and perhaps elite status.

At 34 years old and in his 16th NBA season, James is averaging 27.7 points per game, his highest scoring output since 2019-2010. While his minutes played are slightly down, as is his rebounding and assists, he’s still averaging nearly eight boards and over seven assists per night.

With an 18-12 record, the Lakers are already more than halfway to last year’s 35-win total with 52 games remaining on the schedule. Much of this has to do with James, as he is almost always the best player on the court in every game the Lakers play.

In addition to James, the Lakers have a solid core of Kyle Kuzman, Brandan Ingram, JaValle McGee and point guard Lonzo Ball. Kuzman is averaging 18 points and nearly six rebounds per game, while Ingram adds 15 and McGee nearly 12 per contest. Although Ball is shooting just 39 percent from the floor, he’s contributing in other ways, averaging five assists and five rebounds per game. The return of point guard Rajon Rondo, currently on rehab assignment from hand injury, will bring another veteran presence to help the Lakers for the second half.

The Western Conference is tight with 12 teams within six games of top seeded Denver Nuggets. The Lakers are currently the fourth seed at 2.5 games back. The ultimate goal is to win a championship, but for the Lakers, who have not made the post season in six years, making the playoffs is first priority.  Then, home court advantage in the first round would be a bonus. At this rate, the team has a legitimate chance at both, in large part due to the presence of one of the top players in NBA history, LeBron James.
