World champion Lewis Hamilton ended his title-winning F1 season by dominating the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, at the Yas Marina Circuit which featured Nico Hulkenberg’s dramatic first-lap wipe out.
Sebastian Vettel came just behind long-time rival Lewis Hamilton with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in third and team-mate Daniel Ricciardo in fourth. Hamilton started from pole and remained flawless. An early pit-stop under the virtual safety car proved to be great for the Mercedes’ driver – brought his car in front with control, as he has displayed across 21 meetings.
Carlos Sainz, Renault, was an impressive sixth getting all he could get out of a DNF for Kimi Raikkonen as the 38-year old finishes his Ferrari career with an early mechanical failure. While drama occurred for team-mate Nico Hulkenberg, he clipped Romain Grosjean at just turn nine sending his car up into the air, barrel-rolling into the barriers with flames emerging from his car. Renault’s Hulkenberg was unhurt from a deadly looking accident as Marshals quickly extinguished the fire.
At the front there were no such problems for Hamilton, despite admitting that actor and friend Will Smith had distracted him from his usual pre-race preparations. It was a flawless race as he breezed to his 11th victory of the year. While the chequered flag was flown by Hollywood star Will Smith.
Haas’ Kevin Magnussen’s run to tenth stopped Fernando Alonso the chance to up his points in what is very likely to be his last F1 race before retiring. But the Spaniard still praised after the race, joining rivals Hamilton and Vettel for doughnuts in front of the grand stand.
