Lewis Hamilton denied world title- US Grand Prix 2018
Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have been delayed securing their fifth world championship at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen wrapped up his first victory in more than five years. While Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed second place denying Hamilton and Mercedes their fifth world title and stopping the Briton moving into equal second with Argentinian legend Juan Manuel Fangio behind only the great Michael Schumacher, who has seven.
Despite finishing third behind Raikkonen and Verstappen, Hamilton still extended his championship lead over Sebastien Vettel as the German suffered again another difficult afternoon.
Vettel started from fifth position and inside half a lap, was facing the wrong way after collision with Daniel Ricciardo. Vettel fought back and managed to secure fourth place but a gap of 70 points to championship leader Hamilton and 75 points on offer, his hopes of winning fifth title of his own looks bleaker than ever.
For Lewis Hamilton to have wrap things up he needed to score eight more points than Vettel – and one way to do that was to win the race, with Vettel lower than second. Which for a man in starting from pole on the track where he has won five of the six races held so far it seemed relatively easy for him.
A rare defeat for Mercedes’ Hamilton in Austin caused by a delayed second pit stop, means his fight with Ferrari for the championship continues to next weekend at the Mexican Grand Prix. Vettel must now win all three of the remaining races this season, Mexican Grand Prix, Brazilian Grand Prix and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to stand any chance of beating Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.
However, Hamilton can and more than likely will wrap up the title in Mexico if he finishes seventh of higher, regardless of where Vettel finishes as only wins will do for the German.
