NFL livening up before the Super Bowl.
Who is the best team in the NFL?
With two games remaining in the regular season, many teams are still in contention for the post season, while teams near the top are battling for top seeds in the conference. While the Saints at 11-2 and the Rams at 11-3 are the most likely to land the top spot in the NFC, the Chicago Bears could be the best team in the conference at the moment.
Examining the teams, the Bears are 10-4 and have a +119 point differential. They are sixth in scoring offence and third in fewest points given up. Lead on offence by Mitchell Trubisky, who has 2814 yards passing and 402 on the ground, in addition to combined 27 touchdowns passing and rushing. While Jordan Howard (773 yards rushing) and Tarik Cohen (68 rec, 710 yards) are solid offensive threats, they are not among the best in the league at their position.
The key for the Bears rise is on defence. They have 26 interceptions, 45 sacks and 5 defensive touchdowns. Trying to run on the Bears is futile as well, as they are allowing just 84 yards per game on 3.8 per carry.
A few weeks ago the Rams appeared to be the tops in the conference. But then the Bears shut them down and then the Eagles, a 13-point underdog, took a 30-13 lead into the fourth quarter and held on to beat the Rams 30-23. Los Angeles had a +105 point differential and ranks third in scoring offence but only 20th in points allowed. Sure Jared Goff, Todd Gurley and company are dangerous, but look like a totally different team when trying to come from behind.
Aaron Donald is a beast on the defensive line having recorded 16.5 sacks. However the Bears and Eagles double-teamed him, daring others to put pressure on the QB. It worked, as Philadelphia’s Nick Foles was not sacked during the game. Without Donald’s pressure, the Rams defence is very mediocre.
As for the Saints, they also looked like world beaters before the Cowboys shut them down. Despite the Cowboys having won five of their last six, if the Saints are the top team they need to take them down.
New Orleans is second in scoring offence and 11th in scoring defence and have outscored opponents by 164. The presence of Drew Brees will always make the Saints dangerous. He’s able to spread the ball to Mark Ingram, Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas to give New Orleans an explosive offence.
Excellent against the run, giving up just 78 yards per game, the Saints are poor against the pass, allowing 24 touchdowns and a 100.5 quarterback against rating. This weakness is what makes them a shaky proposition to name as best team in the conference.
Putting it all together, the Bears are the most complete team in the conference. They certainly don’t have the biggest names, but they can’t win in several ways, not relying on a few players. Very similarly, the Eagles won the Super Bowl last year, not with the best individual players, but with the best overall team roster. Watch the Bears to make a significant playoff run.
