Olympics 2020 – What, When and Where?
The biggest quadrennial sporting event is set to be held in Tokyo, Japan in the year 2020. Preparations are underway to host the biggest event of the year in the capital. With less than a year left, the Japanese are working hard to welcome the large number of athletes and visitors.
There are a total of 42 venues where the Games will take place. 27 out of these 42 will take place in the capital. These 27 venues are divided into heritage Zone and Tokyo Bay Zone while the other 15 are located around the Japanese capital.
The Venues that are a must-see:
The New National Stadium has been renovated and holds Japan’s Olympic heritage with all the modern facilities. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies will take place in this stadium. The structure of the stadium has also undergone major changes and now hosts up to 60,000 spectators.
Tokyo Aquatics Centre will host the second biggest set of games after athletics. The Aquatic games have a spectacular venue. The centre includes the competition pools, the sub-pool that will be used in warm-ups and the diving pool. From the extravagant architecture to the highly equipped pools.
The Yunemoshima Park was the first venue to be completed among 8 new venues specially designed for this year’s Olympics. The Park is designed in an archer’s bow shape that has a grandstand along with a warm-up area and the main competition field.
The games will begin on 24th July and will continue till the 9th of August. The games, however, will start two days in advance with women’s football matches along with group matches of softball. Rowing and archery will take place on the Opening day. Women’s 10m air rifle activity will take place on July 24. Basketball 3*3 will take place on the 2nd day, BMX freestyle and skateboarding will take place on 2nd and 1st August. August 1, called the “Super Saturday” when 21 medals will be awarded. This day will be a major happening day in the Olympics. This Saturday will be followed by golden Sunday where 26 medals will be awarded. Women’s marathon, gymnastics, men’s 100m athletics final will all take place on this Sunday.
