Olympic Games originated in ancient Greece almost 3000 years ago – brought back in the late 19th century.

Initially, before the 70’s only amateur players were allowed to take part in the Games. Later, in the late 80s, the Games were opened for professional athletes. The ancient Olympics included several of the sports that are played today. There are about 32 different sports currently being played in the Olympics.

The Olympics along with three other games (Pythian Games, Nemean Games, and Isthmian Games) were the four major games being held by the end of the 6th century. These games were also called the “Classical games.” Out of these sporting events the Olympics were the most famous. These games were so important that historians measured time by the interval between two games i.e. an Olympiad. These games were held every four years in the summer. These games were also an intrinsic part of a religious festival. They were held in honor of Zeus- a Greek god at Olympia. Some historians also say that the Games were founded by Heracles the son of Zeus and Alcmene.

The Games were discontinued and 1500 years later, they were revived by the efforts of Baron Pierre de Coubertin (France). He wanted to create a modern version of the Olympic Games to promote physical education. He got inspired after he visited the ancient sites of the original Olympic Games.

Modern Olympics were held in 1896 where King Georgios I and 60,000 spectators welcomed the participants from 13 different countries. The first event welcomed 280 participants who participated in 43 events. These games included gymnastics, swimming, tennis, weightlifting, and shooting.

The Olympic symbol which holds five interlocking rings represents continents of North and South America, Asia and Australia. This flag was first made in 1920. The summer games officially became an international event in 1924. The eighth Olympic held in Paris hosted 3000 athletes from 44 different countries. These games also included 100 women athletes, unlike the previous games. These Games also featured a closing ceremony at the end. The same year, the Winter Games were also introduced including events like bobsledding and figure skating.

The Olympic Games of 2020 are set to be the most anticipated as they introduce the most innovative technologies. You will see the Japanese technologies shining in every venue where the games will be held. There are about 42 venues in and around Tokyo where these sports events will take place. Tickets have been sold out a year ahead.
