How he passed Novak Djokovic to be the World’s No. 1
The Spanish tennis star, Rafael Nadal has clinched the no. 1 ATP ranking at this year’s end for the fifth time. His position was confirmed after the Nitto ATP Finals and following the defeat of Novak Djokovic to Roger Federer at the O2. Rafael has played a stellar season capturing four titles that include two Grand Slams and two ATP Masters 1000s. Rafael at the age of 33 has replaced Novak Djokovic, the Serbian player to be World No.1 this November 4th. He has also secured the position of being the oldest player to secure this position since 1973.
Rafael has made quite some records by his No.1 ATP Ranking this year. Nadal is the first player to regain the title of year-end No.1 after losing it the following year. He previously has completed at the top in the years 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2017. In this way, he is also the first player to have secured this title five times in non-consecutive years. Moreover, Nadal is also the first player to have an 11-year gap between his first-year end No. 1 (2008) and his last year (2019). This year he has become the fifth player to complete the year at the top of men’s professional tennis on five or more occasions.
The ATP Executive Chairman and President, Chris Kermode said that Rafael has played incredibly this season and fully deserves the title he has secured. Since the inception of ATP rankings back in 1973, only 17 players have accomplished to finish year-end No.1 and it is unquestionably a great achievement to do so in this sport. Rafael has been able to do this five times in his career and this is indeed an impressive achievement. He further congratulated the Spaniard player and his team.
Although Rafael had to end the year 2018 early due to injuries, he returned this year and played the best tennis of his life. Nadal has managed to lift four trophies including the historic 12th title at Roland Garros in June and his 4th US Open in September. He played Australian Open final against Djokovic and contested three Grand Slam championships in a single calendar year for four years. Moreover, the star has managed to claim his first Nitto ATP Final which he has played for 15 years since 2005.
When interviewed the player said that he was surprised to be on top as he had decided not to chase the ranking. He said that this year he limited his play to avoid any more injuries. This year Rafael Nadal split four major championships with Novak Djokovic. Djokovic claimed the Australian open while Nadal was victorious at the French Open for the 12th time. Nadal managed to gain an edge by bagging his Wimbledon semi-final placement points in July which secured his position for the year-end No. 1. Now Novak and Nadal are battling to secure the historical supremacy at Grand Slam Championships where Nadal needs only one win while Djokovic needs 3 more wins to dominate these Championships.
