Ryder Cup 2020 Team Captain
Team Europe’ Captain for the 2020 Ryder Cup has been decided.
Veteran European Tour player Padraig Harrington, who served in the role as Vice Captain of the past three Ryder Cup’s, has been selected to lead Team Europe at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin at the 2020 Ryder Cup.
He was selected captain by Chief Executive of the European Tour, Keith Pelley, European Tour Tournament Committee representative Eduardo Molinari as well as the past three captains – Thomas Bjorn, Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley.
Looking back at Harrington’s career as a player, he secured his first major championship at the Open in 2007, winning over Sergio Garcia in a playoff. Not to be outdone, Harrington defended his title the following year and one-upped it by claiming the 2008 PGA Championship. His 30 titles across the globe include six on the PGA Tour, 15 on the European Tour, four on the Asian Tour and one on the Japan Golf Tour
The 47-year old Irishman has a 9-13-3 record in Ryder Cup play. His first victory with Team Europe came in his second appearance in the event in 2002, winning two points in four matches. Harrington’s biggest success in the Ryder Cup game in the 18 1/2 to 9 1/2 win in 2004. Partnered with Colin Montgomerie, they defeated the likes of Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, Davis Love III and Fred Funk, as well as a singles match win over Jay Haas.
After winning by an equal margin two years later, Harrington concluded his Ryder Cup playing career in the 2010 victory at The Celtic Manor Resort in Wales in 2010.
Paul McGinley named Harrington Vice Captain in 2014, by Darren Clarke in 2016 and in 2018 by Thomas Bjorn. In being names captain for 2020, Harrington becomes the third from Ireland to receive such an honour.
Harrington is humbled and thankful, saying “It is a tremendous honour to be named Ryder Cup Captain and I am relishing the next 20 months as we work towards Whistling Straits and Europe’s defence of the trophy.” He didn’t forget those he played under and knows his experience with those fine captains can play dividends. “I have played under, and been involved with, many wonderful European captains since I made my debut in the contest 20 years ago and I would like to think that my captaincy will be a mix of all of them. I am very much looking forward to taking on this role.”
Europe is 11-8-1 in Ryder Cup play and has won nine of the last twelve.
