What happened at the NFL Super Bowl 2019 in Atlanta?

Patriots win Super Bowl LIII in lowest scoring Super Bowl ever, in the Mercedes Benz Stadium, 3rd of February 2019.

Very few people could have predicted a combined total of 16 points for Super Bowl LIII, which tied the second lowest output in Super Bowl history. After all, the game featured the second and fourth ranked scoring offences in the NFL.  The Patriots and Rams averaged a combined 60 points per game during the regular season and the Patriots averaged nearly 40 points per game in the post season.  For those expecting an offensive battle, the game was a boring disappointment. For defensive purists, it was a sight for sore eyes in a league generally dominated by offence.

The game started strangely for Patriots and star Tom Brady, as he was intercepted on his very first throw. Although the Pats were able to move the ball, all they could muster in the first half was a 42-yard Stephen Gostkowski field goal. After a Greg Zeurlein field goal from 53-yards out, the game was tied 3-3 at the half.

The third quarter featured more offensive ineptitude or was it stellar defence? It was likely a combination of both. In any event, the 3-3 deadlock after three was first time a Super Bowl went three quarters without a touchdown. Those that bet the over obviously were going to lose at this stage in the game.

The Rams extremely poor execution offensively kept the game tied and when the Patriots are close in the fourth quarter, they find a way to win. Brady connected on two key passes to Rob Gronkowski and one to Julian Edelman to set up a two-yard touchdown run by rookie Sony Michel to put the Patriots up, 10-3 midway through the final quarter.

Los Angeles had a chance to tie but former Patriots receiver Brandin Cooks failed to haul in a beautiful throw by Jared Goff in the end zone. The Rams never threatened to score again and after a late interception by Goff, the Patriots ran down the clock, hit a field goal to take the Super Bowl to a final score of 13-3.

A strange game in many aspects, two of the top kickers in the NFL, hitting nearly 90 percent in the regular season, went just 3-for-5 in perfect dome kicking conditions. Neither Goff nor Brady threw a touchdown pass and Goff was sacked four times by a generally mediocre New England pass rush. Rams’ running back Todd Gurley didn’t look 100 percent and rushed for only 35 yards on 10 carries.

The stars of the game were New England running back Sony Michel and wide receiver Julian Edelman. Michel rushed for 94 yards on 18 carries and Edelman took home MVP honors, hauling in 10 for 141 yards.

The win by the Patriots was their sixth in nine tries with Bill Belichick coaching and Tom Brady at quarterback. The greatest dynasty in NFL history just added another in the record book.

Next year the 54th Super Bowl is scheduled to be played on February 2, 2020 located in Miami Gardens, Florida. Inside the Hard Rock Stadium.
