San Antonio Spurs versus Oklahoma City Thunder

Who will win the rematch in this epic Western Conference battle?

The Spurs and the Thunder did battle in a game for the ages, scoring a combined 301 points before the Spurs won in double overtimes, 154-147. LaMarcus Aldridge had a career game in the win, scoring 56 points, hitting all 16 free throws in the process. The rematch this time is in Oklahoma City.

Nearly identical in records, the two teams are heading in opposite directions. The Spurs have won seven of their last ten, while the Thunder have lost three straight. San Antonio is only 7-13 on the road, however and Oklahoma City is a solid 13-6 at home.

Statistically speaking, the teams are nearly identical in scoring and points allowed. The biggest difference is in rebounding and turnovers. The Thunder are ranked second in rebounding but in the bottom third in turnovers. Although getting beat off the board’s in many games, the Spurs take care of the ball, ranked first in fewest turnovers.

San Antonio is lead by DeMar DeRozan, who is averaging 22.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game. The monster game by Aldridge has raised his scoring to 20.7 per night. Along with his 8.6 rebounds and the Spurs have a formidable one-two punch.  San Antonio is one of the top three-point shooting teams in the league, hitting 40.5 percent from three-point range and Rudy Gay, Bryn Forbes and Davis Bertans all hit over 40 percent.

Just as the Spurs have a dynamic duo, the Thunder boast the same with Paul George and Russell Westbrook. George leads the team in scoring at 26.9 per game to go along with eight rebounds. Westbrook is perhaps the most complete player in the league, averaging a triple-double (21.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, 10.7 assists). Steven Adams and Dennis Shroder are two excellent players in a supporting role. Adams averages 15.5 points and 10.1 rebounds, while Shroder adds 15.2 per night.

The advantage should go to Oklahoma City at home, but the two teams are so evenly matched that is boils down to who has the hot hand. For now the Spurs are playing with more focus. In a game that should mimic the last meeting, look for the Spurs to take this one in a game decided late.
