US Masters 2020, What You Should Know..

by | Dec 12, 2019 | Sport Events | 0 comments

The Masters tournament is one of the four coveted major championships in men’s professional golf. The 2020 Masters will be held April 9 – 12. Last year, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka led after the first round with Phil Mickelson a shot back. Tiger Woods was tied for 10th, four off the pace. After 36 holes, there was a four-way tie at the top and Woods was lurking a shot behind. Woods continued his quest for a 5th Masters title, just two behind Francesco Molinari. Dustin Johnson, Koepka and Xander Schauffele finished at -12, but Woods as a shot better for his fifth green jacket.

Who are the favourites for the 2020 event?

Top contenders:

Brooks Koepka

Number one in the World Golf Rankings, Koepka finished tied for second last season in the event. He won three times, which included the PGA Championship for his fourth career major title. In doing so, he became the first player to ever successfully repeat at the PGA Championship and US Open. A remarkable season included top five finishes in every major, only the fifth player in history to accomplish that feat.

Rory McIlroy

The four-time major champion is second in the World Golf Rankings. McIlroy has five top ten finishes at the event and was tied for 21st last year. He won the FedExCup last season and The Players Championship, making him the only player to ever accomplish both in the same season. A winner three times last season for the third time. To top it off, he led the PGA Tour in scoring average, also for a third time.

Dustin Johnson

The 35-year old Johnson is ranked fifth in the world. He has a single major under his belt and four top ten finishes at The Masters.  Last season Johnson claimed his 20th PGA Tour victory, and became the fourth player to secure a victory in his first 12 seasons on tour. A model of consistency, Johnson also played in his 11th straight TOUR Championship.

Tiger Woods

At age 43, Woods won his 5th Masters title, one behind Jack Nicklaus and 15th major title, three behind Nicklaus for most of all time. He has 82 victories under his belt, tied with Sam Snead for most PGA Tour wins. Ranked sixth in the world, Woods had four top ten finishes and three missed cuts in 12 official PGA Tour events last season.

Justin Thomas

Ranked fourth in the world, Justin Thomas had a single major to his credit and has a best finish of tied for 12th at The Masters. He earned his 10th PGA Tour win last season at the BMW Championship, making him one of just nine players to do so before reaching the age of 27. A beast on the Par-5’s, Thomas lead the PGA Tour in scoring average on such holes at more than a half a shot below par. Thomas missed only two cuts in 20 starts in 2019 with seven top ten finishes.

Others with good odds of winning are Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, and John Rahm.
